Etsy and Self Assessment: your year in one sheet

A tax return needs two numbers from your Etsy shop: what came in, and what it cost you. Etsy doesn’t hand you either. Your CSV has both, and the free tool pulls them out in a minute.

Drop in your Etsy CSV, download the report

Turnover, estimated Etsy fees, your costs and net profit, plus every order with its date so you can filter to the tax year. Free, nothing uploaded.

What a return actually needs from Etsy

Turnover. Everything buyers paid you, including the postage you charged. In the report this is the Turnover line on the Summary sheet, built from every order in your CSV.

Expenses. Etsy’s fees are a business cost, and there are more of them than most sellers realise: transaction, processing, listing, the UK regulatory operating fee, VAT on all of those, and Offsite Ads when they apply. Add your materials, packaging and postage. The report estimates the fees per order from Etsy’s published rates and totals your own costs as you entered them.

The £1,000 question. You claim either actual expenses or the £1,000 trading allowance, not both. If your fees and costs come to more than £1,000, actual expenses usually win. You can only make that call if you know the real figure, and that’s the number sellers guess at. Stop guessing; it’s in your CSV.

The April problem, solved

The UK tax year runs 6 April to 5 April, and Etsy exports calendar years. Select both calendar-year files when you upload; the tool combines them. Then filter the Orders sheet to the tax year in Excel. Done.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to do a Self Assessment for my Etsy shop?

If your total trading income (not profit) from self-employment, including Etsy, was over £1,000 in the tax year, you normally need to register and file. Under £1,000 you’re usually covered by the trading allowance. If you’re unsure, check HMRC’s guidance or ask an accountant; this page is not tax advice.

What Etsy costs can I claim as expenses?

Etsy’s fees are a business cost: transaction fees, payment processing, listing fees, the regulatory operating fee, VAT charged on those fees, and Offsite Ads fees. So are your materials, packaging and postage. You claim either actual expenses or the £1,000 trading allowance, not both, so it pays to know which is bigger — which is exactly what your real numbers tell you.

The tax year runs April to April but Etsy exports calendar years. What do I do?

Select both calendar-year CSVs when you upload — the tool accepts more than one file and combines them. The Excel report lists every order with its date, so you can filter the Orders sheet to 6 April to 5 April in Excel or Google Sheets.

Is the report enough for my tax return on its own?

It gives you the two numbers a return needs from Etsy: your turnover and your costs, order by order, with the maths shown. Fee figures are estimates from Etsy’s published rates, so reconcile against your Etsy Payments statement, and keep your own records. Not tax, accounting or financial advice.

ProfitHatch is not tax, accounting or financial advice. Figures are estimates from Etsy’s published rates; reconcile against your Etsy Payments statement and keep your own records. If in doubt, ask an accountant.
